More information:As a counsellor I am influenced by humanistic traditions that embody an image of the individual as self-striving to find meaning and fulfilment in the world. It is a ‘person centred’ approach that shares a vision of psychology embodying recognition that all individuals have a capacity for creativity, growth and choice.
In my work as an individual psychotherapist I am particularly influenced by a psychodynamic approach which assumes that we all possess an unconscious mind and that feelings held in the unconscious may be too painful to be faced. This may lead to ‘maladaptive’ function (or defence mechanisms) usually developed in early life, which is (at least in part) unconscious.
I regard myself as an integrative practitioner. In aiming to give emotional support to those experiencing distress, I assess individual and changing needs during the course of therapy. My focus is on the subjective experience of the client, rather than imposition of personal definitions and structures. Of primary importance is the ‘therapeutic alliance’ – the development of a trusting relationship between a client and myself.
Rather than consisting of a single theoretical formulation, my approach consists of a broad set of theories and models connected by shared values and philosophical assumptions. I use a range of theoretical approaches, skills and modes of practice and consciously use the client / counsellor relationship to facilitate un-judgemental guidance and encouragement, challenge and inspiration to creatively manage and resolve practical, personal and relationship issues. Acknowledging the necessity to apply ‘core conditions’ which may be insufficient in themselves to bring about change, my practice sometimes includes skill enhancement involving cognitive behavioural skills with the aim of empowering a client towards self-determination with an emphasis on their strengths.
I respect client autonomy, their subjectively unique perspective, values and belief systems. In working together, we examine behaviour or situations causing problems and evolve strategies with which it might be possible to initiate change. Sometimes assistance may involve offering information or reframing self-perceptions, enabling clients to review their options.
I believe that a non-directive approach encourages clients to set their own agenda. It is a process of exploring, understanding and resolving issues, reducing confusion and enabling choice in a non - exploitative safe environment. My goal is to develop a rapport that enables the client to express feelings and emotions, to look at many different aspects of their life, relationships and themselves in a way that they may have been previously unaware or fearful of. I regard clients as the experts in their own lives and seek to assist them in recognising their own coping abilities and inherent strengths.
I endeavour to work with clients on a journey of therapeutic change, through which they may acquire greater openness to experience and a move towards an enhanced reliance on personal experience as a source of values and standards, leading to the reorganisation of self within their own cultural context.
